Who is Betsy Ross?
Betsy Ross, originally Elizabeth Griscom, was born into a Quaker family. [12] Known for making the American flag, Betsy most likely learned some of her sewing skills from friends and neighbors.[13] Betsy met her first husband John Ross, when working for a man called John Webster; together they opened an upholstery shop. Flags were in high demand throughout the colonies during Betsy’s lifetime, so it is not surprising that Betsy made flags in her shop. After they opened the shop unfortunately her beloved husband was killed, and she was a widow. Betsy kept the business running until 1827, when she gave it to her daughter Clarissa Sidney Wilson.[15]
