What Did Betsy Ross REally Do?
Not only does Betsy’s story raise questions, but so does this painting because of the people in it and where they are. In the first exchange between Ross and Washington about the flag, the only people that were said to have been there were Betsy Ross, George Washington, Robert Morris, and George Ross; yet in this painting, which is clearly a different exchange (because the flag is finished) there are three men behind Washington.[35] In this painting there are also two young girls, they could possibly be her children, but unfortunately information on them is limited and it cannot be determined whether they were actually there or not.[36] When Washington asked Betsy to make the flag accounts indicate that they were in her upholstery shop. They could have been in her shop in this painting, with that in mind they could have done this business elsewhere.[37]
