Elizabeth “Betsy” Ross did not just make the flag, she also contributed to the design.[30] Betsy’s daughter, Rachel, claimed that when Washington showed her the sketch of what the flag was desired to look like she made suggestions including; that instead of the flag being a square it should be a rectangle, and instead of the stars being scattered haphazardly they should be in some sort of order, whether it be a circle, star, or in lines. Betsy’s last suggestion, which would become what she is most credited with was that instead of having six pointed stars make them be five pointed.[31] She supposedly made the suggestion to change them from six to five, because they were easier, and quicker to make.[32] She demonstrated this for the men that came to her shop.[33] In addition Rachel said that according to her mother Washington was the only one contributing to the design of the flag, and the other men had minimal input.[34] Betsy’s grandsons made claims similar to those of her daughter, saying that their grandmother contributed to the flag by not only making it, but also the arrangement and style of the stars.
